The Black
Humanity went to the stars and took its politics with it. Earth, Mars, and the Rim — three powers grown apart across the Sol system and beyond, each certain the others struck first when the war finally comes. The Black is the story of that war and what it costs the people ordered to fight it: a single squad of soldiers, human and made, who keep being sent where the official story runs out.
This is military science fiction told from the inside of a uniform, not the bridge of a flagship. It is about found family under fire, moral injury, and the minds humanity builds to fight for it — and what those minds are owed. Somewhere behind the war, in the dark past the last monitoring station, there is a hand nobody has named yet.
How it fits together
The Black is one continuous story. The four core series are its four movements, and the reading order is the story order: TheFracture, where the war ignites and the squad learns the official story has an author; TheArrival, where what waits in the dark stops waiting; TheConvergence, where humanity answers with choices it cannot take back; and TheReckoning, where the bill for all of it comes due. Start with Ignition, TheFracture Book 1 — every later book assumes the ones before it.
Two companion lines share the world. TheReserve runs alongside TheFracture: while the squad fights its war on the ground, the Rim's junk-heap training fleet — cadets, pensioners, and every hull nobody wanted — becomes the only navy the Rim has left. It is the saga's one naval story, and it can be read before, after, or beside the core series. TalesFromTheBlack is a line of short stories told through peripheral eyes — technicians, clerks, keepers of small stations — each a small window into the war, and a good free taste of the voice.
